Product Imager Renewal: New Interface and Image Registration Improvements
We have renewed the interface and processing flow of the Shopify app Product Imager so that merchants can register product images more easily and more efficiently.
The basic workflows for CSV registration and handle matching remain the same. This renewal adds more control over how existing product images are handled, product image alt text management, clearer progress display, job history, and improvements for larger image registration tasks.
For existing users
The screen design has changed, but the core workflow for CSV registration, handle matching, and product data retrieval has not changed significantly. You can start with the default settings, which are close to the previous behavior.
Renewal Overview
In this renewal, we refreshed the app home screen and made it easier to access the main features. Navigation to CSV registration, handle matching, product data retrieval, job history, help, support, and pricing has been reorganized so daily operations are easier to follow.
We also designed the interface to feel more consistent with the Shopify admin experience, while preparing the app for future improvements and Build for Shopify readiness. If the screen looks different from what you were used to, please know that the goal is not to change your work dramatically, but to make the app easier and more stable to operate.
Bulk Manage Product Image Alt Text
Product Imager can now manage product image alt text in addition to image file names. CSV registration, handle matching, and the dedicated Alt Text screen can check existing values, fill blanks, and set alt text during image registration. Existing alt text is not overwritten.
CSV Registration: Choose How to Handle Existing Images
CSV registration now lets you choose how images should be added or replaced when a product already has images.
- Replace only the entered image columns: Replaces only the image columns entered in the CSV.
- Add to the beginning of existing images: Keeps current images and adds the CSV images before them.
- Add to the end of existing images: Keeps current images and adds the CSV images after them.
- Replace existing images: Deletes existing images and replaces them with the CSV images.
Specify Alt Text Together With Image Files
The new CSV format supports columns such as image1_alt and variant_image_alt. The screen includes Image + Alt, a link to the Alt Text screen, and the existing image-only format, so merchants can move gradually.
For example, if only image1 and image3 are entered in the CSV, you can replace only the first and third images while keeping the second image unchanged.
This is useful when you want to update only part of a product’s image set, or when gradually replacing existing jpg/png images with webp images.
Download Product Data in Three CSV Formats
After retrieving product data, you can download Images only, Alt only, or Images + Alt CSV files for image registration, alt text checks, and bulk editing.
Handle Matching: More Control Over Existing Images
Handle matching also now lets you choose how to process products that already have images.
- Skip: Products with existing images are not processed.
- Add to end: Adds matched images after the existing images.
- Add to beginning: Adds matched images before the existing images.
- Remove non-rule images: Treats images that do not follow the naming rule as outside the target scope.
Handle matching links image files to products based on the file name and the product handle. For example, if the product handle is sample-product, the following file names are interpreted as follows.
sample-product.jpg: Treated as the main product image.sample-product_1.jpg,sample-product_2.jpg: Treated as product images in sequential order.sample-product_red.jpg: Treated as a variant image forred.other-product.jpg: Not processed because it does not match the product handle.
Variant images are linked when the text at the end of the file name matches a product variant option value. For example, if a product has a variant option value red, sample-product_red.jpg is treated as the image for that variant.
Fill Only Blank Alt Text During Handle Matching
Handle matching can link images by file name and product handle while filling only blank alt text. This optional setting does not overwrite existing alt text. Position-based templates can use {product_title}, {image_number}, and {variant_option}.
Dedicated Alt Text Screen for Checking and Filling Blanks
The dedicated Alt Text screen can review existing alt text, export CSV reports for blanks, duplicates, and file-name-like values, and fill only blank alt text in bulk. Standard text uses store product titles and variant names, such as Product title - Variant name. The app respects the product data language, does not translate by interface language, and does not add generic labels such as "Image 2".
Progress Display and Job History
When registering many product images, it is important to know how far the process has progressed. The renewed screen makes it easier to check statuses such as waiting, processing, completed, and failed.
States that can look like the process has stopped, such as waiting for a worker, are now easier to distinguish. You can also review previous processing results from the job history.
Image registration continues even if you close the browser. If you close the screen during processing, please check the job history later.
Faster Registration Processing
This renewal also includes improvements to image search, product matching, and image ordering logic. These changes make it easier to manage larger product and image registration tasks while checking progress along the way.
We have also improved the process to reference existing files and link them to products wherever possible, reducing unnecessary image duplication. Depending on Shopify’s specifications, derived images may still be generated, but the app is designed to avoid increasing unnecessary duplicates as much as possible.
Processing speed depends on the number of products, number of images, image size, and Shopify response conditions. For that reason, we avoid unsupported claims such as a guaranteed speed multiplier on this page.
What Still Works the Same Way
The following core workflows are still available as before.
- Bulk product image registration using CSV files
- Handle matching based on product handles and image file names
- Retrieving product data from Shopify
- Checking existing image alt text and filling blanks
The default settings are designed to be conservative. CSV registration uses adding images to the end of existing images as the basic default, and handle matching skips products that already have images. Alt text filling can also start with blank values only, without overwriting existing alt text.
When You Need Help
If you are unsure how to proceed, please first check the operation manual and CSV guide. Reviewing the file naming rules and CSV columns often helps identify the cause of an issue.
When contacting support, including the following information will help us check the situation more smoothly.
- Target shop
- Feature used: CSV registration, handle matching, or product data retrieval
- Date and time of execution
- Status shown in the job history
- Examples of the CSV file or image file names
What to Check Next
The renewed screen keeps the familiar workflows while giving you more control over how products with existing images are handled. We recommend first testing CSV registration or handle matching with a small number of products, then confirming that the order and replacement behavior match your intention.
